Disordered Eating and Body Image Therapy

Disordered eating is defined as an unhealthy relationship between the self and food. This can look like an over or under indulgence in all or certain foods, as well as an over-focus on “healthy” eating or an over or under indulgence in physical movement. In reality, a healthy relationship between the self and nutrition is one that nourishes the body in a way that supports the rest of your life. It allows you to engage in food for pleasure, food for nourishment, and food for community and connection.

The same goes for physical movement. This corresponds with a healthy body image - a body that is engaged, alive, and able to support you through the rest of your life and personal wishes. Our culture of perfectionism and the right vs wrong eating and moving industry is a real struggle in maintaining a healthy relationship with food, movement, and body. Individual, family, and group therapy can help regain the balance needed for food and movement to be a joy and supportive part of your life.
