Master’s in Counseling Student Intern Jen Heglar

Child, Adolescent and Adult Therapy Intern

Our student interns are counselors in training, from graduate education programs in the Appalachia area. They are under the direct supervision of our clinical directors Sybil and JJ, and our clinical supervisors, Kiley, Kelsey, Connie, Molly, Kayla and Cristin. They are working toward their graduate degrees in counseling. Part of their education is practical experience in an internship setting. Our center hosts up to 3 interns each semester, offering a rich learning experience for them and an easily accessible source for mental health treatment for our community.

To schedule with them, contact our main office at 423.408.8041 or support@journeycentercounseling or fill out our new client inquiry form and mark that you want to work with one of our interns.

Treatment focus: Anxiety, Depression, Self discovery, life transitions

Being a person is hard, and there's no instruction manual. There’s also no shame in asking for help when you need it. That’s where therapy comes in!

I have experience working with clients who have anxiety, ADHD, and are struggling to adjust to new phases in their lives. I don’t believe you are broken or in need of fixing, and our sessions will reflect that belief. I hold space and help clients explore their inner workings, so they can use that knowledge and understanding to move through the world. While I am new to mental health counseling, I am not new to working with children and adolescents. Young people (and many adults) don't have a lot of autonomy in their daily lives, so I believe in giving it to them during sessions.

In sessions, I tend to use a person-centered and feminist approach; you are an individual who is a part of larger systems that influence and are influenced by your choices. The client is the expert on their lived experience, and I am there to support them as they work toward a deeper understanding of themselves and a more integrated way of being. I often incorporate techniques from Gestalt therapy, internal family systems, and somatic experiences into client sessions. I also like to incorporate play into therapy (yes, even with adults) whenever possible.
